The NFL suspended Carolina Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig for his low blow on San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings Monday night. He will be out one game without pay.

“Carolina Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig has been suspended without pay for one game for an act of unsportsmanlike conduct during Monday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers,” a statement read. “During the fourth quarter, Moehrig punched San Francisco wide receiver Jauan Jennings at the end of a play, violating Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to ‘any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship,’ including, among others, ‘throwing a punch, or a forearm, or kicking at an opponent.’

“Moehrig will be eligible to return to the Panthers’ active roster on Monday, Dec. 1 following the team’s Nov. 30 game against Angeles Rams. Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Moehrig may appeal the suspension. Any appeal will be heard and decided upon by either Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster, or Jordy Nelson, the hearing officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA to decide appeals of on-field player discipline.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter later reported Moehrig planned to appeal his suspension. It remains to be seen what his argument will bring to the decision.

Moehrig said after the game that Jennings initially pushed him in the back. He downplayed the incident, adding that Jennings “wanted to do a little dirty stuff.”

“He hit me in the back… that’s really all it was. Not much,” Moehrig said, via Joe Person of The Athletic. “… There really isn’t that much to it, bro. It was just that, you know what I’m saying? Like I said, I’ll take that one. He wanted to do a little dirty stuff, so it is what it is, man.”

Panthers head coach Dave Canales said he would speak with Moehrig once he got back to the locker room. He declined to comment further until he watched the film, as of Monday night.

“I’ll get to the bottom of that,” Canales said. “I wanna see what exactly happened, and I haven’t had a chance to talk to Tre [yet]. That’ll be a conversation that I’ll dig into. … I’ll talk to him tonight, and I wanna make sure — I’ll have a chance right now to look at the film and see what happened.”

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the incident after the game. He stood by Jennings after being on the receiving end of a “cheap shot.”

“The guy took a cheap shot and hit him in the balls,” Shanahan said. “I was real proud of Jauan for not losing his mind out there and getting to the sideline.”
