Simone Biles opens up on decision to bow down to Brazilian gold medalist Rebeca Andrade

Team USA wrapped up the women’s gymnastics program at the Paris Olympics on Monday with a stack of medals including a new silver and bronze from the final event – the individual floor competition. Simone Biles and teammate Jordan Chiles grabbed headlines for their performances, but also for what they did after their routines. The medal-winning duo bowed down on the Olympic podium to gold medal-winner Rebeca Andrade of Brazil, creating one of the best images of the games so far, and the ultimate portrait of sportsmanship.
On the TODAY Show on Tuesday, Biles opened up about the decision to bow to Andrade, which she says was Chiles’ idea. Chiles, who first appeared to land in fifth in the floor event, won bronze after an inquiry boosted her score by a tenth of a point at the last second.
“I think it’s all about sportsmanship, and we don’t care whether we win or lose. We’re always going to keep a good face and support our competitors because they’ve worked just as hard as we have for that moment,” Biles said on TODAY.
“So you have to give them their flowers,” she continued. “And that’s exactly what me and Jordan were doing, and we were so happy for her. She deserved it. She had the best floor routine of the day and in the Olympics. So it’s like, yeah, she deserved it.”
It was the first gold medal for Andrade at the 2024 Olympics, and Biles and Chiles made sure she got her due. Andrade had a long journey to her individual floor medal, including recovery from three separate ACL tears in her career.
Andrade’s gold medal on Monday came after she and Team Brazil battled the United States for gold in the women’s team final earlier at the Paris Olympics.
Ravens’ Marlon Humphrey calls bow ‘disgusting’
Baltimore Ravens defensive back Marlon Humphrey found out this week what it’s like to be on the wrong side of a bad sports take. After Team USA stars Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles bowed to gold medal-winner Rebeca Andrade of Brazil on the podium after the individual floor finals, Humphrey posted on social media: “This is literally disgusting.”

As it turns out, not many people agree with Humphrey’s opinion. His post on X has over 7.5 million views one day after he decided to share his thoughts, it also has more than seven thousand responses.
“This is literally beautiful,” a poster responded. Another wrote: “God forbid athletes show respect to a fellow athlete who has suffered a torn ACL multiple times.”
Humphrey acknowledged the backlash to his take in another post hours later on X. He wrote: “I’m lowkey getting cooked right now. I think I’m getting cussed out in Brazilian on Instagram lol.”
Unfortunately for the Ravens standout, his response only led to more opportunities to roast him. Social media users were quick to point out that he wasn’t getting cussed out in “Brazilian” because Brazilians actually speak Portuguese.
