Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a knee injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 16-13 Week 15 home defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers. Mahomes, who was helped to the locker room by the team’s training staff, shared a message on social media.

Mahomes did not reveal specifics of his injury. However, he said, “not going to lie it hurts,” adding he’ll be “back stronger than ever.”

“Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it hurts,” Mahomes wrote on X. “But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever.”

The injury occurred with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when Chargers defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand brought down Mahomes. The three-time Super Bowl champion’s left knee buckled, and he stayed on the ground for a few minutes before leaving the game.

Andy Reid reveals Patrick Mahomes to undergo MRI, offers concerning take

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said that Mahomes will undergo an MRI on his left knee. Reid didn’t sound optimistic.

“I don’t know, but it didn’t look good,” Reid said. “You guys saw it. We’ll just see where it goes.”

Kansas City is hoping that Mahomes didn’t suffer a serious injury, but it’s likely he will not play the rest of the season since the team is eliminated from playoff contention. Mahomes couldn’t get much going Sunday, finishing his day with 189 passing yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception.

After losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX in February, the Chiefs were looking to reach the final game of the season for the fourth consecutive year. Kansas City has struggled to find any consistency all season, as the team lost its first two games and is now on a three-game losing streak.

This is the first time Mahomes has missed the playoffs since becoming starter in 2018. The 30-year-old has led the Chiefs to at least the AFC Championship Game every season he has been under center. During that run, Mahomes has guided the Chiefs to five Super Bowl appearances.
