Patrick Mahomes injury update: MRI reveals Chiefs QB suffered torn ACL
Kansas City superstar Patrick Mahomes was injured in Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Unfortunately, the injury was quite serious.
The Chiefs provided an update on social media on Sunday evening, revealing that Mahomes had suffered a torn ACL in his left knee. He will have to have surgery to repair it.
“An MRI has confirmed that Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes sustained a torn ACL in his left knee in today’s game,” the Chiefs update read. “Patrick and the club are currently exploring surgical options.”
The injury happened with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when Chargers defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand brought down Mahomes, and it appeared the star quarterback’s left knee buckled. Patrick Mahomes was on the ground for a few minutes, and the training staff helped him to the locker room.
The fear was that the injury was serious. Coach Andy Reid was short after the game, saying simply, “It didn’t look good.”

Then, a short time after the game ended, Patrick Mahomes took to social media to release a somewhat cryptic message that portended bad news. It read:
“Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it hurts,” Mahomes wrote on X. “But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever.”
Mahomes, for the most part, has looked solid this season, but he has not looked like what fans saw in 2022 when he won his second MVP. Entering Sunday’s game, Mahomes has completed 63.1% of his passes for 3,398 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions with a 91.2 passer rating.
This will be the first time Mahomes misses the playoffs since becoming the starter in 2018. The 29-year-old has led the Chiefs to at least the AFC Championship game every season he has been the starting QB. During that run, Mahomes has played in seven conference title games and five Super Bowls.
