Patrick Mahomes drops 3 spots, ranked No. 4 on NFL Top 100 players list

For the last two years, there’s been a strong case for Patrick Mahomes as the top player in the NFL. After all, he led the Kansas City Chiefs to back-to-back Super Bowls and topped the league’s Top 100 players list a year ago.

That’s apparently not the case this season, though. Mahomes came in at No. 4 in the NFL’s Top 100 Players list released Friday.

Christian McCaffrey came in at No. 3 on the list, just ahead of Mahomes. Lamar Jackson ranked No. 2 and Tyreek Hill – Mahomes’ former teammate – came out on top as the No. 1 player in the NFL this year, according to a player vote. The announcement quickly made its way around social media with many expressing surprise that the Chiefs star fell out of the top spot despite leading the franchise to a second straight Super Bowl victory.

Mahomes and the Chiefs had an interesting road to a Super Bowl LVIII title last season. The wide receivers struggled mightily as Kansas City took an 11-6 record into the playoffs, putting more pressure on the quarterback. Still, despite the issues at receiver, Mahomes finished with 4,183 yards and 27 touchdowns en route to the third Super Bowl win of his career.

This year, the Chiefs brought in plenty of weapons. Marquise “Hollywood” Brown arrived via free agency. Then, Kansas City selected Xavier Worthy – who set a new NFL Scouting Combine record in the 40-yard dash – in the NFL Draft. So far, Mahomes said he’s building a connection with both.

Specifically with Worthy, though, there’s sure to be an adjustment process. Just don’t expect his quarterback to take it easy on him.

“There’s no easing,” Mahomes said during the offseason program. “He’s going to have to be ready to go. We got a lot of competition on this offense. He got a lot of mental work in these last few weeks that he had during OTAs and minicamp, but it’s time to go now.

“Y’all saw it with Rashee [Rice] last year and some of the throwing-up days he had. We’re going to push you to the limit and prepare yourself to be ready to go for the season. That’s not just him. That’s everybody and everybody has to have that mentality when they come into camp.”

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will kick off the 2024 season against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in primetime. It will be a Thursday night matchup on Sept. 5.
