Denver Broncos star cornerback Patrick Surtain was helped off the field after suffering an injury in the low red zone against the Dallas Cowboys. Surtain had just broken up a pass in the end zone intended for George Pickens before he came down awkwardly.

Surtain’s legs appeared to get tangled under Pickens. He was immediately tended to by trainers on the field before being helped off.

The CBS broadcast booth immediately commented on how big an injury it could be. Patrick Surtain headed to the sidelines, set to get further medical attention.

“Oh this is a monster injury possibility here,” Tony Romo said on the call. “Surtain is going to go one-on-one on Pickens, and he’s going to run all the way across the field, which is hard for corners. We’re talking about one of the best in the game, if not the best cornerback.”

Patrick Surtain entered the medical tent on the sideline following the injury. The Denver defense managed to hold on to keep Dallas out of the end zone on the ensuing play, forcing a field goal attempt instead.

On the following series, Surtain returned to action. It was a good thing for the Broncos, too, because his absence would have been significant. Romo explained how it would have impacted things.

“This changes your entire gameplan, though, because we’re going to double-team CeeDee (Lamb), we’re going to put our best corner on Pickens, because they match up. You know you plan all week as a coach, and then your guy who’s hopefully going to take someone out of the game — hard to do against these receivers — you’ve got to completely change your plan.”

During Denver’s offensive possession following Surtain’s exit, CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson provided a further update. It was quite positive.

“The good news is is Patrick Surtain is out of the blue tent,” Wolfson said. “It was a lower leg injury. He was holding his shin after that play in the end zone. He did some running on the sideline. You can hear the cheers from the fans as he emerged from that blue tent. He sat down on the bench and now he’s just walking around trying to keep it loose. He is questionable to return, looks like he wants to get back in there when the defense gets back on the field.”
