Pete Alonso announces decision to enter MLB Free Agency after final game for Mets

The New York Mets saw their season end this afternoon in a disaster of a finish to miss the MLB Playoffs. With that, it also looks to be marking the potential end of Pete Alonso as part of the franchise in Queens.
Following today’s road loss at 4-0 to the Miami Marlins, New York was officially eliminated from the playoffs. Alonso then went on to say postgame that he may not be back with the franchise in deciding to enter MLB Free Agency again.
“I mean, for me? Like, I mean, playing for this organization, this city? I mean, it’s really – I mean, for me, they’ve continued to believe in me. And, I mean, I’ve loved playing here. There’s some great guys in this clubhouse. There’s some great people on the staff. I mean, every single day, it’s just been a pleasure coming to work and putting on the orange and blue,” Alonso said postgame. “So, for me, yeah. I mean, I’ve really appreciated it and have been nothing but full of gratitude every single day. So, I mean, yeah. I mean, nothing is guaranteed, but, I mean, we’ll see what happens. I mean, I’ve loved being a Met. So, hopefully they’ve appreciated me the same.”
“I’ve grown up in this organization. What I’ve done here? I mean, I’m really proud of the mark I’ve left. I want to be the best teammate and best player I possibly can be, not just for the people here but for the franchise and for the fans,” said Alonso. “So, yeah. It’d be great but, again, we’ll see what happens.”
Alonso signed a new two-year, $54 million deal last offseason in February. An opt-out after the first year of it, though, will now make him available again this winter.

Alonso just finished his seventh season with the New York Mets after being drafted in 2016. He has batted at .253 BA/.341 OBP/.516 SLG with 264 home runs, which is a franchise record, and 712 RBI. He then had a .992 fielding percentage from his place at first base. That would go on to earn him Rookie of the Year in 2019 and five honors, including four consecutive selections, as an All-Star, while also earning some past consideration as NL MVP. He also has won a pair of Home Run Derbys at All-Star Weekend as one of the better bats in Major League Baseball.
However, New York completely collapsed to close this season in trying to make consecutive postseason appearances for the first time since 2016, after they reached the NLCS in 2024 for the furthest they’ve been since making the World Series in 2015. The Mets had one of the best records in baseball going into the All-Star break in mid-July at 55-42, but went 28-37 the rest of the way to officially miss the playoffs this afternoon at 83-79. The Cincinnati Reds will instead be the final wild card team in the National League in their place with a 4-2 tiebreaker in games this season against New York.
In now potentially looking for a new team, Alonso wants one thing. It’s the chance for him to win at the highest level, wherever that may be in the league.
“I mean, it’s a good question. I mean, I think the biggest thing is, like, I want to win. You know, I want to win. I want to be able to – I mean, I know we didn’t this year but we had the right pieces, I think. We just didn’t do it,” said Alonso. “So, for me, I think, at the beginning of the year, you just want to have the best possible chance to hold up the trophy at the end and see yourself being a champion. So, for me, like, that’s why I do this. I want to be on top of the mountain. I want to win a World Series. So, for me, that’s the ultimate goal.”
