Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was fired by the team Wednesday, first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. However, there could be a twist.

A shocker in Seattle: Pete Carroll is expected to be out as the Seahawks head coach, per sources,” Schefter wrote on Twitter. “He still could remain in the organization, but not as the head coach.”

Carroll’s Seahawks just missed out on returning to the postseason in 2023. Jody Allen, the Chair of the Seattle Seahawks, released a statement.

“After thoughtful meetings and careful consideration for the best interest of the franchise, we have amicably agreed with Pete Carroll that his role will evolve from Head Coach to remain with the organization as an advisor,” the statement read.

“Pete is the winningest coach in Seahawks history, brought the city its first Super Bowl title, and created a tremendous impact over the past 14 years on the field and in the community. His expertise in leadership and building a championship culture will continue as an integral part of our organization moving forward. Pete will always be a beloved member of the Seahawks family.”

Schefter had more on the move during Wednesday’s edition of SportsCenter.

“Now he still could remain with the organization, there are ongoing conversations, but it marks the end of a historic era in Seattle 14 seasons,” Schefter said. “He wanted to continue on. He said this week that he wanted to keep coaching, didn’t want to retire but clearly, there were issues that they were working through and really Seattle had become a version of New England out west … And those conversations were going on throughout this week. And they’ve resulted in the decision in which Pete Carroll is now going to be out as the Seahawks head coach.”

As far as Carroll staying in the organization as the team said in a statement, it could be up in the air.

“We’ll see how this plays out,” Schefter said. “It’s a fluid story. It’s still ongoing right now. But the headline today, Pete Carroll becomes the seventh NFL head coaching change right now. Seattle moves on from him as the head coach.”

He won Super Bowl XLVIII and lost Super Bowl XLIX during his time.

Carroll, 72, had a 137-89-1 record with the Seahawks since coming in ahead of the 2010 season. His NFL record is 170-120-1 in his tenures with Seattle, New England Patriots (1997-99) and New York Jets (1994).

Carroll is also known for his time at USC, where he resurrected the Trojans to national prominence, winning multiple national titles. However, recruiting scandals and violations with punishment handed down by the NCAA highlighted the end of his tenure.

He finished his time at USC 97-19 from 2001-09.
