The Steelers are visiting with potential first-round quarterback Desmond Ridder of the Cincinnati Bearcats on Thursday. On NFL Now, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport detailed how Ridder factors in to Pittsburgh’s search for a replacement for legendary quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

“We’ll start with Desmond Ridder,” started Rapoport. “He is spending today with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s hard to imagine any other team doing as much quarterback work than the Steelers. I know Mike Tomlin has eaten dinner with several prospects, Ridder included, before and after Pro Days. They have been to almost every single Pro Day, (Steelers GM) Kevin Colbert and Tomlin have been a mainstay there. Taking a look at a couple quarterbacks today. Ridder there, and Sam Howell goes tomorrow, the UNC quarterback.

“As far as Ridder, he’s got a pretty busy schedule. It is all the quarterback teams you would imagine. The Carolina Panthers and the Seattle Seahawks both host him for a top 30 visit next week.”

Moreover, Ridder led Cincinnati to fantastic success over his time with the Bearcats. Many experts believe it’ll take time to hone in on his skillset, but his potential is off the charts. He’s been one of the hardest quarterbacks to predict a landing spot for. Still, a year behind current Steelers quarterback Mitch Trubisky could be perfect for Ridder.

On the other hand, Rapoport mentions Pittsburgh will be meeting with North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell  on Friday. Prior to the 2021 season, he was expected to be drafted at the top of the first round. However, an uneven season sent him tumbling down draft boards. Luckily, he’s now enjoying a resurgence in advance of the big day. While some believe he’s a second round selection, the Steelers could select Howell at No. 20 if they fall in love with the former Tar Heels star.

Of course, there are plenty of options — a trade to the top of the round to secure either Liberty’s Malik Willis or Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett isn’t out of the question. Additionally, Ole Miss’ Matt Corral is a wildcard among the group.

As you can see, the Steelers will be looking for a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft, it’s just a matter of who they select.
