Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington reveals his actual weight

There are different types of tight ends out there. Some can be more athletic and almost act like wide receivers, while others are excellent blockers and become part of the power game. Now in his third season, Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington can certainly be described as a powerful football player.
This season in particular, much has been made of Washington’s weight. The Steelers list him at 6-foot-7 and then the eye-catcher is his weight, at 264 pounds. That hasn’t sat quite right for many people around the NFL, though, and now it turns out that he’s much heavier than that.
Washington recently appeared on the St. Brown Podcast. There, they pressed him about his weight, making Washington break out laughing before admitting that at his last weigh-in, he came in at 311 pounds as a tight end.
“I ain’t weigh myself in a minute,” Darnell Washington said. “But… look. Okay, okay. Look, I’m gonna keep it a buck. I’m 311 [lbs].”
The act of changing a player’s size in the official listing isn’t entirely uncommon. Wide receivers or quarterbacks become taller. Linebackers get to their ideal weight in those listings. However, the nearly 50lbs gap for Washington is eyebrow-raising.

For comparison to other tight ends, Travis Kelce and George Kittle are both listed at 250lbs. Then, the Pittsburgh Steelers list offensive tackle Troy Fautanu as coming in at 6-foot-4 to go along with his 317 pounds. Broderick Jones, meanwhile, is listed at the exact 311 pounds.
Coming out of college at Georgia, Darnell Washington ran a 4.64 on the 40-yard dash and had a 31-inch vertical jump. That’s pretty athletic for his size. Notably, however, that was when he did weigh in at 264 pounds. So, it would appear the Steelers are still publicly listing that number, despite what more recent weigh-ins might have shown.
On the field, Washington is still making his impact felt. This season, he has played in 10 games and made eight starts. With 18 receptions, he’s one more catch away from passing his career high of 19 receptions that he set a season ago. His 209 receiving yards are already a career high, while his one touchdown reception has tied his career high. All of that comes on 11.6 yards per reception.
Regardless of his weight, the Steelers need Washington to keep playing well. At 6-foot-4, Pittsburgh holds a slight lead in the division against the rapidly improving Baltimore Ravens. So, holding onto their division lead is going to require an effort from everyone.
