'Property of Sophie Cunningham': Indiana Fever star takes shot at Jacy Sheldon during fan interaction at autograph signing

Sophie Cunningham has surged in popularity across the WNBA after a viral altercation with Jacy Sheldon. The Indiana Fever guard delivered a hard foul on Sheldon in a June 17 matchup against the Connecticut Sun, responding after Sheldon got into it with Caitlin Clark earlier in the game.
So when one fan wanted an autograph from Cunningham recently, it came with a unique request. Cunningham was surprised when the fan handed her a card of Sheldon’s to sign rather than one of her own. But once she saw the request, she couldn’t contain her laughter.
The fan wanted Cunningham to sign the card “Property of:” before her name. And she happily obliged.
“She’s the problem,” Cunningham joked to the fan.
In the original altercation, Sheldon drove toward the basket for a layup and Cunningham wrapped her arms around the Sun guard and appeared to drag her toward the ground. Sheldon immediately hopped up off the floor and charged toward Cunningham, who looked to grab her hair as several other players got involved.
Both players had to be separated and were ultimately ejected as a result of the play. Indiana would go on to win 88-71 after Indiana got a technical free throw and Connecticut made one of two flagrant free throws.

Cunningham grew exponentially on social media over the next few days, gaining nearly a million new followers on social media after the dustup with Sheldon. Many fans perceived it to be in retaliation to an earlier play in the game where Sheldon hit Clark in the face.
With Clark having missed the previous 10 games due to injury, Cunningham has also started to take on a larger role for the Fever. Cunningham has started each of those past 10 games, averaging 12.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists while shooting 49.1% from 3-point range.
The Fever should continue to rely on Cunningham even after Clark returns with recent season-ending injuries to Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson. The Fever next take on the Dallas Wings at 6:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
There’s also a matchup against the Sun looming for Sunday, which will be the second time the teams have met since the altercation between Sophie Cunningham and Jacy Sheldon. Hopefully both sides can keep their emotions in check for the upcoming game as well, but it definitely makes for an interesting pregame storyline.
