Report: D'Angelo Russell, Dallas Mavericks agree to two-year deal worth $13 million

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, D’Angelo Russell and the Dallas Mavericks have agreed to a two-year contract. Russell will make $13 million during his time in Dallas, a place where his role will be quite important to begin the 2025-2026 season.
“Breaking: Free agent guard D’Angelo Russell has agreed on a two-year, $13 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks, sources tell ESPN,” Charania said via X. “Mavericks officials and CAA Co-Heads of Basketball Austin Brown/Aaron Mintz and Antonio Russell reached the new contract after free agency began.”
Shams later added more information to his report, giving out an exact contract detail. Russell will have a player option for the second year of the deal, potentially leaving the door open to once again hit free agency next summer.
“Russell will have a player option in the second season of his two-year, $13M deal with the Mavericks, sources said,” Charania said via X.
The Mavericks will spend the opening portions of next season without star point guard Kyrie Irving. A torn ACL will keep him sidelined until the calendar flips over to 2026. General manager Nico Harrison desperately needed to find a point guard in the meantime, striking a deal with Russell.

Last season, Russell spent time with both the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets — appearing in a total of 58 games. He finished with career lows at 12.5 points per game while shooting 39% from the field. His rebound and assist numbers were not too great either, averaging 2.8 boards and 5.1 dimes every time out there.
Russell will have some familiarity with a couple of his teammates already. Anthony Davis and Max Christie were members of the Lakers before being moved over to Dallas in the Luka Doncic trade. While things did not fully work out in Los Angeles, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd will now have the opportunity to make everything gel.
Dallas put itself in a position where it wants to win now and has expressed extreme confidence in being able to do so. A few more pieces were needed to make sure the entire puzzle fit together. Russell fits in multiple different ways, depending on who is healthy on the Mavericks roster moving forward.
All of this after winning the NBA Draft lottery and taking Duke Blue Devils superstar Cooper Flagg. Not too often do we see the consensus best player in the draft join a contender.
