Report: Los Angeles Chargers signing DE Clelin Ferrell

Defensive end Clelin Ferrell is signing with the Los Angeles Chargers following Khalil Mack‘s elbow injury in Monday’s win over the Los Angeles Raiders, per insider Jordan Schultz. Ferrell was selected with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and has played six NFL seasons with three teams.

In 88 games, Ferrell boasts 158 tackles, 24 TFL, 16 sacks and four forced fumbles. He worked out for the team on Tuesday and was signed on Thursday.

Ferrell was a four-star recruit coming out of Benedictine (Richmond, VA) in the Class of 2015, where he was tabbed as the No. 89-ranked player in the country. He committed to Clemson out of high school, where he’d play from 2015-2018. As a Tiger, he won National Championships in 2016 and 2018 and was named a two-time All-American.

He was selected by the then-Oakland Raiders in the 2019 NFL Draft, marking his destination for the first four seasons of his career. He’d play 58 games with the Raiders, recording 105 tackles and 10 sacks. Following the 2022 season, he signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers and then signed with the Washington Commanders the following offseason.

He was cut by the Commanders on Aug. 26 and is now headed to join a Los Angeles Chargers organization that has opened the season 2-0 with wins over the Kansas City Chiefs and the Las Vegas Raiders, Ferrell’s former team.
