Former NFL star Doug Martin died over the weekend at the age of 36. Now, it’s been revealed that he reportedly died while in police custody. This followed an arrest for an alleged break-in at an Oakland home.

Per The East Bay Times, Martin was taken to an area hospital where he later died. Meanwhile, Oakland Police say that officers were simultaneously told that the suspected burglar was going through a medical emergency. What’s described as “a brief struggle” then followed and the individual became unresponsive after being taken into custody. Paramedics would provide aid before he went to the hospital.

Notably, the police officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave. That is in accordance with department policy.

“Paramedic personnel arrived, provided medical aid, and transported the individual to an area hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately, the individual later died at the hospital,” Oakland Police Department said in a statement.

Doug Martin played his college football at Boise State. There, he was a standout star for the Broncos, rushing for 3,431 career yards and 43 career touchdowns. That was on 5.6 yards per carry. He also had 67 career receptions for 715 yards and four touchdowns. That’s still eighth all-time in Boise State program history for rushing yards and sixth in program history for rushing touchdowns.

It was a college career that certainly stood out to the NFL. He’d become a late first round pick, going 31st overall, in the 2012 NFL Draft. He’d begin his professional career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played through the 2017 season, before wrapping up his career in 2018 with the Oakland Raiders.

Oakland is Doug Martin’s hometown. He was born there before growing up in Stockton and attending St. Mary’s High School. A multi-sport athlete, Martin also starred in track and field, garnering plenty of recruiting interest on the West Coast.

Martin finished his NFL career as a two-time Pro Bowl selection and an All-Pro selection for the 2015 season. He finished his NFL career with 5,356 rushing yards and 30 rushing touchdowns on 4.1 yards per attempt. Martin also had 148 receptions for 1,207 yards and another two touchdowns.

For the time being, no cause of death has been released for Doug Martin. There are now multiple ongoing investigations into the incident. That includes the Oakland Police Department’s homicide and internal affairs units, the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
