Report: San Francisco 49ers, Fred Warner agree to three-year, $63 million extension

Fred Warner and the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a big contract extension. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the veteran linebacker will sign a three-year, $63 million contract that includes $56 million in guaranteed money. Warner will be the NFL’s highest-paid linebacker.
This is the second time in his seven-year career that Warner has landed a history-making contract. On July 21, 2021, the former BYU star signed a five-year contract extension worth $95 million with $40.5 million guaranteed.
In his seven seasons with the 49ers, Warner has emerged as arguably the best linebacker in the NFL. The 28-year-old has reached the Pro Bowl four times and has been named to the All-Pro First Team four times. In 2024, Fred Warner played in all 17 regular season games and notched 131 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, seven passes defended and one defensive touchdown.
Fred Warner was not worried about getting a new contract
Last month, Warner was asked about his contract status with the 49ers. “I mean, it seems like they’re releasing plenty of funds as it is already,” Warner said during voluntary workouts in late April, per Niners Nation. “You know, I get paid plenty already, but listen, that whole part of it, I know they, on my agent and the team, and that’ll all handle itself out. I’m just ready to just go to work and be the best version of myself.”

Warner’s contract extension comes shortly after the 49ers gave new contracts to tight end George Kittle and quarterback Brock Purdy. “I think it’s obviously worked out really well being able to knock those things out earlier,” Warner said on Saturday, per NBC Sports Bay Area. “Allowing us to focus just purely on ball and getting better as a team, so things are moving in the right direction.”
Warner still had two seasons remaining on the contract he signed in 2021. However, he had a $29.2 million salary cap this season, so the new deal would lower his cap number for 2025.
The 49ers hope that Warner can help get the team back on track this fall. After reaching the NFC Championship game from 2021-2023 and the Super Bowl during the 2023 season, San Francisco finished the 2024 season with a 6-11 record. It was its first losing season since 2020 when the team went 6-10.
