According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Dallas Cowboys and starting left guard Tyler Smith have agreed to a historic contract extension. Smith is now the highest-paid player at his position, set to make $96 million over the next four years. All but just under $15 million of the deal will be guaranteed as well.

“Sources: The #Cowboys and standout G Tyler Smith agreed to terms on a 4-year, $96M extension —$24M per year — to make him the NFL’s new highest-paid at his position,” Rapoport said via X. “Smith gets a whopping $81.2M guaranteed in a deal done by agents @JoePanos1 and Todd France at @AthletesFirst.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter added to the conversation, posting a graphic that highlights the highest-paid guards in football. Smith now occupies the No. 1 spot, $500,000 ahead of Trey Smith of the Kansas City Chiefs on an annual basis. He is also ahead of a division rival, the Philadelphia Eagles’ Landon Dickerson.

Dallas is spending some money after trading away Micah Parsons. Before Smith, cornerback DaRon Bland and fullback Hunter Luepke got extensions. Owner/general manager could get kicker Brandon Aubrey done too, making it a successful few weeks following the blockbuster trade.

Everything for the Cowboys right now is making sure the Dak Prescott Super Bowl window remains open for the quarterback’s contract. Locking down one of the better offensive linemen out there helps.

More on Tyler Smith, career with the Dallas Cowboys

Dallas originally drafted Smith to be the next franchise left tackle. However, when Tyron Smith decided to stay for another season, the Cowboys kicked the rookie inside to guard. Results far exceeded expectations, making the move a permanent one.

In 48 games played, Smith has started in every single one of them. The number will only grow moving forward, beginning Sunday afternoon against the New York Giants. Dallas wants similar accolades to follow as well, being a Pro Bowler in two straight seasons, and earning second-team All-Pro in 2023.

Weirdly enough, Smith is one of the more veteran presences on the Cowboys’ offensive line currently. A lot of draft capital has been spent on the unit in recent years, including the past two first-round picks. Tyler Booker is playing right guard, while Smith lines up next to left tackle Tyler Guyton. Even center Cooper Beebe is a second-year player. Smith earns a second contract right as his leadership becomes quite important for the franchise.
