Riley Herbst, Sheldon Creed playoff hopes in jeopardy after multi-car wreck at Roval

Everything was going well until it wasn’t. Riley Herbst got into it with Anthony Alfredo and Sheldon Creed also paid the price. Herbst and Creed now have their NASCAR Playoff hopes up in the air.
Sheldon Creed and Riley Herbst both entered today with a good buffer on the cutline. However, things aren’t so clear after they were both in a wreck on the frontstretch in Stage 2.
The 98 and 18 will not be able to make any more mistakes this afternoon.
Depending on how the rest of the race plays out, these two drivers might be going home, in terms of the playoffs. They will have to rely on another playoff driver or two to get into an incident or have some other kind of issue on track.
Right now, Shane van Gisbergen is looking like he will drive his way into the Round of 8. That will likely be who pushes Creed out of the top-8 and below the cutline. There is still a lot of race left to go, but with one stage to go, things might be over for at least one of these teams.
Sheldon Creed has had a ton of bad luck. This was no different. He was more or less stopped and had no damage. Then, he got hit from behind and into the cars in front of him. That damage is going to be too much for the 18 car.

Sheldon Creed blows an engine after wreck
As the race went back green, Sheldon Creed had more issues. The 18 car got going on the ensuing restart after the wreck, but not much further. Before too long, smoke was coming out and Creed was radioing into his team that his engine had gone.
This is likely due to the wreck, if we’re being honest. But Joe Gibbs Racing has had issues with engines in the Xfinity and Cup Series this year. There is hope for Creed, even though he is out of the race. But he will be sweating it out in the hauler today.
This year we have seen Creed come so close and yet be so far from winning. He has found a way to lose, to let the win slip through his fingers. Now he will be sweating out one or two points, which is what will ultimately decide his fate in the NASCAR Playoffs.
Sheldon Creed appears to be on his way out of the playoffs. It will take a big moment for another playoff driver for him to advance to the Round of 8.
