Ross Chastain hit with devastating penalty at Charlotte, playoff run threatened in Stage 3

Ross Chastain did a lot of work to get himself above the playoff cutline in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Round of 12 finale at the Charlotte ROVAL. He might have undone all of that in Stage 3.
Chastain was caught speeding on pit road, resulting in a costly pass-through penalty. He was running eighth before coming down pit road, two points ahead of Joey Logano for the eighth and final advance spot.

“I put it in the wrong gear,” Chastain said on his radio, via Kelly Crandall of RACER/ESPN.
That’s two pit road mistakes for Chastain at the ROVAL. Earlier in the race, he missed the turn at the exit of pit road. Chastain certainly can’t afford a third, or any mistake for that matter. He has to be perfect from here on out to advance.
Chastain got a break after the penalty, as Logano hit pit road with 10 laps remaining. Logano surrendered his two-point lead over Chastain. Chastain is back in front and Logano has to gain 10 spots to get back to Chastain. He now has the fresher tires, and the No. 22 team is hoping that will be the difference.
