Russell Wilson injury update: Pittsburgh Steelers release Wednesday practice report

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson was a full participant in practice on Wednesday, the team revealed in its initial Week 6 injury report. It’s huge news for the veteran, who has yet to appear in a game this season as he deals with a calf injury.
Wilson signed with the Steelers this offseason and was named the starting quarterback. However, he reaggravated the calf injury ahead of Week 1 and Justin Fields has started the first five games of the year.
It’s still unclear at this point whether Wilson will return for the matchup against the Raiders on Sunday. However, he seems to be on the best track all season to do so and it could come at a much-needed time with Pittsburgh coming off of back-to-back losses.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said that Wilson will have to prove to the coaching staff he is ready to play, or it will keep rolling with Fields.
“Until Russ gets to a point where we’re comfortable with what we’re looking at, he’s able to execute all schematics, he’s able to put together back to back consecutive days and so forth, I just think that’s a hypothetical conversation,” Tomlin explained. “We’re going to continue to push forward with Justin until those things are legitimate and then we’ll make decisions accordingly.”

Tomlin told reporters in his weekly press conference that defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal and linebackers Nick Herbig and Alex Highsmith are all considered out for this week. That will put some pressure on other players to step up, including Jeremiah Moon, who was activated from the reserve/injured list to the 53-man roster ahead of last week.
The Steelers could also be thin at running back yet again with Cordarelle Patterson already considered out and Jaylen Warren doubtful. Kickoff for the game against the Raiders is set for 4:05 p.m. ET at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
