Safety car slams into wrecked car during NASCAR Mexico Series championship race

A very scary moment for NASCAR Mexico Series driver Santiago Tovar as the safety car slammed into him while he was wrecked. Tovar was buried in a tire barrier during the championship race at the Autodromo Internacional Miguel E. Abed track, just outside Puebla city.

When the safety cars show up, that usually means relief and help for the drivers involved. Not in the NASCAR Mexico Series race on Sunday. As Tovar sat and waited to be helped out of the tire barrier, his No. 22 Quaker State car was victimized once again.

The moment was captured on social media and shared all over racing groups. Thankfully, it appears that everyone involved was able to leave the wreck without much issue. That includes the race car driver and the safety car driver. This is a wild thing to see.

The NASCAR Mexico Series crowned its champions on Sunday. The Mexico Series uses a modified version of the Cup Series Playoffs. At the end of the Round of 10, the top four drivers advance to the championship with two additional Wild Card drivers.

The Challenge Series, Mexico Truck Series, and Mexico Series all crowned champions over the weekend. It was a big finale to the season for these three series.

Gerardo “Chispa” Rodriguez was crowned as the Truck Series champ. He had a very dominant season with 7 wins on the year, including the finale. The Challenge Series race and championship was claimed by Diego Ortiz. Finally, the big one, Alex de Alba was crowned 2025 NASCAR Mexico Series champion. Ruben Rovelo won the race.

NASCAR Mexico Series crowns ARCA driver ROY

While the NASCAR Mexico Series didn’t feature too many drivers who also raced in the United States, there was at least one driver. Eloy Falcon is a Rev Racing driver who competed in a couple of ARCA races this season. He is also the 2025 Mexico Series Rookie of the Year.

So, the Mexico Series is still a valid pipeline, it would seem. The racing down there is fun, and the fans are passionate. Everyone thinks about Daniel Suárez when they think about NASCAR and Mexico. But drivers like Andres Perez de Lara and Eloy Falcon are starting to rise through the ranks. There are others like Regina Sirvent who are also making a name for themselves in the States.

NASCAR has invested in Mexico as a market. That is both with events like the Mexico City races this summer and with the NASCAR Mexico Series. Even though Mexico is off the big schedule for 2026, the chances it gets back in the future are pretty high.
