Samson Nacua was five yards away from glory. In the New Orleans Saints’ preseason showdown against the Tennessee Titans, the wide receiver reeled in a missed field goal in the back of the end zone and returned it 105 yards before Titans tight end Thomas Odukoya dove into his legs, narrowly forcing him out of bounds.

Although Nacua was unable to score six points to give the Saints a 16-13 lead before halftime, the team’s coaching staff won’t forget that type of speed. The Saints signed Nacua on Aug. 2.

In 2024, he played for the UFL’s Michigan Panthers and recorded 11 receptions for 125 yards. He also appeared in two games for the USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers in 2023.

Nacua was initially signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL Draft and competed in their training camp. However, he was unable to carve out a permanent spot on the team’s roster.

Now, the Saints have given Nacua another chance to find success in the NFL. The 6-foot-3 wide receiver played five seasons at the Utah (2016-20), appearing in 45 career games with eight starts. After initially walking on with the Utes in 2016, Nacua earned a scholarship as a freshman and amassed 82 career receptions for 1,015 yards and 11 touchdowns.

In 2021, Nacua transferred to BYU for his final season of collegiate eligibility, appearing in 12 games with 21 receptions for 329 yards and three touchdowns. Samson Nacua will aim to find similar success in his new environment.

Spencer Rattler throws first NFL preseason TD

New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler threw his first NFL touchdown pass in Sunday’s preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans.

Rattler, who relieved Jake Haener in the second quarter, connected with wideout Equanimeous St. Brown for a 21-yard score. Rattler dropped it in a bucket perfectly for St. Brown, threading the needle between two Titans defenders.

The former South Carolina standout went 2-for-4 for 34 yards on the nine-play, 70-yard scoring drive, the best offensive drive of his preseason to this point.

Rattler, the Saints’ fifth-round selection, is competing with Haener to be the backup to Derek Carr. Both Haener and Rattler had solid outings in the first preseason game but struggled mightily in their second showing.
