SEC Championship odds: FanDuel releases line on potential Texas A&M vs. Georgia matchup

The SEC Championship Game comes with massive implications this season. The winner is set to earn a first round bye in the College Football Playoff. The loser will then be hoping to make the Playoff as an at-large.

Ahead of the SEC Championship Game, FanDuel released a line on one of the potential matchups, the Texas A&M Aggies vs. the Georgia Bulldogs. Before the two teams are officially set, FanDuel lists the Bulldogs as a 9.5-point favorite over the Aggies. The over/under is also set at 49.5 points.

For fans interested in the moneyline, Georgia is listed at -335 while Texas A&M currently sits at +265 for this potential matchup.

Georgia has already punched their ticket to the SEC Championship Game thanks to wins over Texas and Tennessee this season. On top of that, the Bulldogs end the season with Georgia Tech, a non-conference opponent. That means, no matter what happens during the final week of the regular season, the Bulldogs are in thanks to tiebreakers.

Even with that guarantee to be in the SEC Championship Game, Georgia will need to maintain its focus or could be going into the postseason with a third loss.

It’s a little more complicated for Texas A&M. The Aggies haven’t clinched a spot in the SEC Championship Game, but could with a win over rival Texas. The Longhorns enter that game 6-1 in conference play while the Aggies are 5-2. That means a win for Texas A&M would pull the two even and give the Aggies the tiebreaker over their rival.

For a game that hasn’t been played since 2011, this just adds to the emotions surrounding the game that was already going to have a charged atmosphere, as head coach Mike Elko previously explained, it means a ton to the fans.

“I think just, in general, and I’ve said this from day one, when you have two programs as large as these two programs are as close to each other as they are, it doesn’t make a ton of sense for them not to play. So, it always felt weird not playing,” Elko said. “And so now, to be playing and to be playing for what we’re playing for? Yeah, I’d imagine (it) will be pretty electric Saturday.”

Nothing is guaranteed for the loser of the SEC Championship Game. Whatever team loses this hypothetical matchup will then have three losses for the season. At that point, their fate will be in the hands of the College Football Playoff selection committee.
