Spencer Rattler Explains Advantage Of Playing In Multiple Offenses During Nfl Draft Process, Senior Bowl | 01.31.24

South Carolina senior quarterback Spencer Rattler is looking for an opportunity to boost his stock for the 2024 Draft. Despite that fact, he may already have a leg up on some of the competition.

With Reese’s Senior Bowl practices underway, college players hoping to get their name called in the 2024 NFL Draft have a chance to add to their collegiate film. For seniors across the country, it is a chance to showcase what they have to offer once more before the NFL combine and their pro days.

In between all the fanfare and practices ahead of the senior bowl game, On3’s Andy Staples caught up with the former star Oklahoma and South Carolina quarterback to discuss the draft experience on a number of other topics. One of the things Staples was curious about was whether or not playing at multiple universities in different systems is helping Rattler at the senior bowl.

“It helps a ton,” said Rattler. “A lot of this stuff we’re doing up here right now isn’t foreign to me. We worked a lot of this stuff, and I’m very familiar with a lot of it. So, it kind of helps me be ahead of the curve, which is good.”

In the modern football world, you are fortunate if you spend the entirety of your collegiate career at one university with one head coach and one offensive coordinator. And Rattler’s experience of going from Oklahoma to South Carolina is more so the norm than the exception.

With the Sooners, under then-head coach Lincoln Riley, Rattler played in 23 games, completing just over 70 percent of his past attempts, four 4595 yards, 40 passing touchdowns, and 12 interceptions over three seasons. Unfortunately, his final season with the Sooners was one to forget as he was replaced midway through the season by the likes of Caleb Williams, who is now the odds-on favorite to be the top player selected in the 2024 NFL draft.

In his two seasons at South Carolina under Shane Beamer, Rattler put up solid numbers yet again but did have some struggles thanks to South Carolina’s inability to pass block consistently. With the Gamecocks, over two seasons, he would record 6212 passing yards, completing 539 of his 798 pass attempts with 37 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.

It wasn’t just all X’s and O’s that Staples and Rattler went over. The college football expert also picked the South Carolina quarterback’s brain on how he’s enjoying the senior bowl experience.

“It’s awesome to be out here with all the best guys in the country. I mean, this is the best you’re going to get out here, no matter what the conference is,” Rattler responded. “They say this is where the path to the draft starts; this is where everything starts. So that’s serious. [There’s] a lot of big-time coaches, GM; everybody out there. So it’s a blessing to be out here. I’m just gonna work my tail off every day and try to play clean ball.”

Rattler is currently projected to be a day-2 pick going in the second or third round, depending on who you ask. He has all the skills and tangibles to be a starter or better in the NFL, especially since he was the No. 1 ranked quarterback in the 2019 recruiting class. All Rattler must do is put together an impressive showing at the various events leading up to the 2024 NFL Draft and he could very well find himself competing for a starting spot by the time NFL training camp rolls around in July.
