Steelers release safety Terrell Edmunds in roster moves

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released former first-round pick Terrell Edmunds as a part of several roster moves that were made, they announced on Saturday.
The former first-round pick was released along with running back Jonathan Ward. Edmunds was drafted by the Steelers in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Virginia Tech.
The safety spent five seasons in Pittsburgh, before spending time with the Eagles and Titans in 2023. Edmunds originally signed with the Jaguars for the 2024 season, before being released and signed to the Jags practice squad during the preseason. The Steelers then signed him in September before releasing him Saturday.
The Steelers also activated linebacker Tyler Matakevich and receiver Ben Skowronek from the Reserve/Injured List to the 53-man roster as part of the moves.
The Steelers are 6-2 on the year and have won three straight games entering Sunday’s showdown with the Washington Commanders.

Steelers OLB Preston Smith reveals he requested trade from Packers
Elsewhere with the Steelers, they picked up outside linebacker Preston Smith from the Packers earlier this week.
Smith revealed Wednesday he requested a trade away from the Green Bay Packers (6-3).
Smith, 31, cited an unnatural fit in first-year Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley‘s 4-3 scheme. The Steelers run a 3-4 defense, which Smith played in for the first nine seasons of his career. Smith said he requested the trade a couple weeks ago ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.
“It’s just what I’ve been playing in the last nine years in my career,” Smith said, via Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “Till this past season, it was what I was comfortable playing in and what I got used to playing in the previous nine seasons. Just being back in that system is like riding your favorite bike again.”
It has been a busy week for the Steelers. We will see how the moves play off the rest of the year.
