The Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins have had a busy Monday full of moves. That now includes a trade that is sending tight end Jonnu Smith to the Steelers.

This comes as part of the blockbuster trade that also sent Jalen Ramsey to Pittsburgh and Minkah Fitzpatrick to Miami. Along with the move, the Steelers will also be giving Smith a new contract, which is reportedly a one-year, $12M extension done by Drew Rosenhaus.

In the end, the trade sent Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith, and a 2027 seventh-round pick to Pittsburgh. Then, Miami received Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.

Jonnu Smith had previously been reported to be of interest to the Steelers. That was, in no small part, because Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is familiar with him from their time together with the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons.

In 2024, Smith was a Pro Bowl selection. He was targeted 111 times and had 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. Those were also Dolphins franchise records for a tight end. So, he’s likely at the height of his value and Smith was looking for a new deal from Miami. His deal had been scheduled to pay him $4.8 million for the 2025 season.

Jonnu Smith is joining a tight end room that was headlined by Pat Freiermuth last season. He had 65 receptions for 653 yards and seven touchdowns. Beyond that, Darnell Washington was the team’s next most productive tight end with 19 receptions for 200 yards and a touchdown. So, there’s now plenty of depth in the tight end room for the Steelers.

This comes at a time when it appears the Steelers are going all in on the 2025 season. Pittsburgh was finally able to officially get the news that Aaron Rodgers was coming to town to lead the offense. However, he’s 41 years old now and hasn’t committed to playing beyond this season. In fact, he’s gone so far as to suggest that this could be his final professional season. That means that the Steelers likely have one season to make something happen with him under center.

At wide receiver, the Steelers have also been active during the offseason. That, notably, included trading away George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys while trading for DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks. That, alongside Jonnu Smith, should make for plenty of options in the passing game for Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers.
