Another Australian Supercars star is coming to NASCAR. Cam Waters is set to make his Truck Series debut with ThorSport at Martinsville. Waters, a Ford driver, has been rumored for other NASCAR starts as well.

Shane van Gisbergen winning the Chicago Street Race last season may have opened up a huge door for Supercars drivers. Chevy has SVG. Now, Ford is bringing Supercars driver Cam Waters to the United States.

According to Kelly Crandall of Racer.com, Waters will pilot the No. 66 truck for ThorSport. The Martinsville Truck Series race is scheduled for Friday, April 5. Already, Waters has made it to America to prepare for his race.

“We’ve been working away at making this happen for some time and to finally be given the chance to race, and with a top operation, is great,” Waters said, via Crandall. “I’m not putting too much pressure on myself knowing I will be getting thrown into the deep end without any testing, but hopefully I can adapt reasonably quickly and be competitive. It’s a short oval so I’m sure it will be pretty wild out there.”

Twice in his career, Cam Waters has finished runner-up in the Supercars championship standings. An 11-time race winner in the series, Waters is seen as a talented driver and he is still under the age of 30, until later this year.

Sponsored by Monster Energy, we could see that sponsorship carry over to his NASCAR debut in the Truck Series. It is interesting that Waters has opted for an oval as his first NASCAR start instead of a road course, where he would be more comfortable.

Cam Waters could make more NASCAR starts in the future

Again, since SVG won last year at Chicago, the Supercars pipeline has opened and I’m not sure it’s going to close any time soon. Brodie Kostecki and Richard Childress Racing. Now, Cam Waters is getting his turn in NASCAR.

Now, the biggest surprise has to be the fact Waters is going to the Truck Series for an oval race. Both SVG and Kostecki went straight to the Cup Series to race on a road course, play to their strengths.

There were rumors over the offseason that RFK Racing was looking at Waters to fill their Stage 60 car at road courses this season. Now, that could still happen in the future. But those rumors have largely gone quiet in recent weeks.

RFK wants to expand to three full-time teams. Could Cam Waters be part of that expansion in the future? That’s probably too big of a question to answer with all of the hypotheticals that go into it. Still, pay attention to Waters in his NASCAR debut. If he impresses on an oval, he could fast-track himself a spot in one of the national series full-time.
