The Tampa Bay Buccaneers plan to release backup quarterback Kyle Trask, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Trask has been the backup for the franchise since he was drafted in 2021.

The Buccaneers initially added Trask with the No. 64 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, a second-round pick. He has been on the roster ever since, though he has not really gotten a chance to play much.

Kyle Trask has thrown only 11 passes in the NFL, completing four of them for 28 yards. He has not thrown a touchdown pass or an interception.

To date, Trask has appeared in just seven NFL games. He will revert to the injured reserve with a shoulder issue, where he will be able to work out an injury settlement or a release.

There will likely be a market for the 6-foot-5, 236-pound backup, though. Kyle Trask is a former Heisman Trophy finalist, finishing fourth for the prestigious award during an extremely productive 2020 campaign at Florida.

Kyle Trask’s career at Florida

Kyle Trask had a remarkable journey to the college ranks, initially starting off as a lightly scouted prospect. He caught the eye of the Florida coaching staff at a camp and pulled down one of his only Division I offers in the recruiting process as a result.

From there, he emerged as a backup to Feleipe Franks. But Trask would get his shot sooner than later. And when he did, he made sure it counted.

He was the team’s primary starting quarterback in 2019 following a season-ending injury for Franks. When he took the job, he didn’t look back, throwing for 2,941 yards with 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

A year later, in 2020, Kyle Trask would become a Heisman Trophy finalist by throwing for 4,283 yards and 43 touchdowns, against just eight interceptions. He was named a second-team All-SEC selection after leading the FBS in passing touchdowns. He also set the Florida single-season passing touchdowns record, eclipsing Danny Wuerffel‘s previous mark.
