Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin has requested a trade, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported. He has been in talks for a new contract with the franchise as training camp began.

McLaurin has been searching for a long-term deal with the Commanders as he enters the final year of his contract. Talks have taken place, though no deal has come together through the first weeks of camp.

McLaurin initially held out of training camp, but reported earlier this week. However, he was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list due to an ankle injury, Commanders coach Dan Quinn told reporters.

McLaurin is entering the final year of a three-year, $68 million contract and is looking for a long-term deal. He put together a career season in 2024 as Jayden Daniels went on to win NFL Rookie of the Year, setting a new career-high with 13 touchdowns while totaling 1,096 yards. Those numbers helped him get to his second Pro Bowl appearance.

After news broke of McLaurin’s trade request, ESPN’s Adam Schefter provided more details on how the situation got to this point. He said the former Ohio State star is still confident he can get a deal – but he doesn’t think the Commanders will be the ones to make it happen.

“He has not received the contract he has wanted,” Schefter said on SportsCenter. “The two sides have not made any type of meaningful progress. And while he awaits a new deal, he’s lost confidence that he can get it from Washington. So a team that is awash in good vibes now has its first negative story – a controversy that hangs over this franchise. Its popular, respected, talented wide receiver, Terry McLaurin, now has asked to be traded.”

The Commanders have also made it clear they don’t intend to move McLaurin, Schefter said. However, teams have been watching the situation closely, and he added it will be interesting to see if the trade request changes that mindset at all.

“Now, the Commanders have had no interest in moving on from Terry McLaurin,” Schefter said. “But I know there have been other teams that have been monitoring this situation waiting to see if the circumstances change. Now that McLaurin has requested a trade, we’ll see if that does anything to loosen Washington’s grip on it.

“But up until now, the Commanders have had zero interest in moving on from McLaurin. He’s shaking it up. He’s now requesting a trade.”
