There’s always drama when Scottie Scheffler is near the top of the leaderboard at a major, but a Thursday shot in the opening round at The Open might just have taken the cake. And it had very little to do with Scheffler.

In fact, it might have been a patron or even a commentator that created the most viral moment of the day. It came right after one of Scheffler’s best shots of the day.

Scheffler was on the 17th hole, staring at a downhill iron shot toward the green. After he released his swing, hilarity ensued while the ball was mid-flight.

Someone ripped an incredibly audible fart. No, really.

“This is a great view of it here, because (it’s) so far above the green,” one commentator led in. “And downwind you can get onto this green. Scheffler…”

Scottie Scheffler wound up and hit. And the ball cruised toward the green, taking an excellent line. Right as it began its descent from the apex of the flight path, a loud fart ripped through the broadcast audio.

And immediately the other commentators began laughing hysterically. Somehow, the lead commentator held it together for a brief moment.

“There’s so much to say about that shot off the club face,” he said. “That’s extraordinary. Let’s stick to the golf. Just a little bit of wind from behind. Just helps it ease down the green.”

The commentary on the Scottie Scheffler shot wasn’t done there. A second replay of the shot then hit the screen, audio of the deadly fart included. And more hilarity from the commentators.

“There’s an echo, as well,” he said, barely keeping it together. “What a shot from Scheffler. And off the back of his tee shot on the 16th, that one there…”

Scottie Scheffler’s shot landed just in front of the cup and rolled to a foot or two past it, giving him a terrific look at birdie. He would convert it, moving to -3 under for the tournament, where he finished his opening round.

That put Scheffler just one shot off the lead, currently shared by Matt Fitzpatrick, Haotong Li and Jacob Skov Olesen at -4 under. That certainly puts him right in contention heading into the final three rounds of the tournament.
