Trevon Diggs injury update: Brian Schottenheimer reveals where Cowboys DB stands in possible return

Trevon Diggs is going to be one of the more interesting players to watch in the closing stages of the season for the Dallas Cowboys. Diggs returned to practice ahead of the Detroit Lions matchup but did not see the field. Now, all eyes are on Sunday night’s game at home vs. the Minnesota Vikings.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed where Diggs currently stands as of Wednesday. He says the cornerback is still working his way back, looking to return to full speed after spending time on the sidelines. Additions the Cowboys made at the trade deadline even got mentioned by Schottenheimer.

“He’s still in the ramp-up period,” Schottenheimer said via Nick Harris of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “He does feel healthy, I know he wants to play. But at the end of the day, we have to do what we think is in the best interest of not just him, but also the football team. When you miss time, there’s a ramp-up period for not just your body, but your mind — figuring out the defense and there’s some new faces in the huddle. I love him as a player, but ultimately he’s got to show us that he’s ready to do everything the right way.”

Diggs has not played since mid-October when Dallas went on the road to Carolina and lost to the Panthers. This is the third-straight season he has missed significant time due to an injury. Knee issues continue to pop up for him, all stemming from the third game of the 2023 season at MetLife Stadium.

The Cowboys have struggled in the secondary all season, with or without Diggs in the lineup. Daron Bland is not having the year many expected after signing a massive extension. Rookie Shavon Revel is early in his NFL career after returning from his own knee injury. Multiple safeties have been rotated in and found no success either.

Dallas is set to begin a season-defining four-game stretch, all of which are must-win. Making the playoffs seems most achievable by winning the NFC East. The Philadelphia Eagles continue to leave the door open, most recently losing on Monday Night Football to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Whether or not Diggs plays a role down the stretch, we will have to wait and see. Schottenheimer believes there is still more to be done before getting Diggs back on the field, especially in critical games.
