A late caution has led to another caution. We are getting to less than 20 laps to go, and Ty Gibbs just took a massive hit. There have been a couple of violent hits now, late in this race. First, William Byron and now, Gibbs. The NASCAR Playoffs are being thrown for a loop.

Las Vegas is a tricky track, but in subtle ways. Pit road is tricky, and getting to pit road is tricky. And of course, on a restart, drivers are going to get aggressive. Many times, too aggressive.

Contact from Christopher Bell, as this field was shifting and sorting itself out, was all it took. Ty Gibbs took a violent hit with the back of the car into the outside wall and then got hit a couple of more times as his car went to the bottom of the track.

This race is going to come down to a late restart now. This was going to be the late restart that ended the race, but then this incident happened. Shane van Gisbergen had a potential top-10 finish taken away.

11 cars were involved in this Ty Gibbs incident officially. It is going to completely change how the end of this race plays out.

Ty Gibbs wreck leads to Denny Hamlin win

Following the restart wreck with Ty Gibbs and others, the race came down to a 14-lap run to the finish. A mix of drivers had two and four tires on their cars from the previous pit stops.

Chase Briscoe and Joey Logano were on the front row. They had two tires. A host of drivers behind them had four tires and were ready to make them work on the longer run. That’s exactly what happened.

Just when it looked like Briscoe was going to hold off Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin, the 11 came alive. Hamlin made it around the track in the last five laps like a bat out of Hell. He was on a rail and was not going to be stopped by anyone in front of him. He got around Larson and soon set his sights on Briscoe.

Had the Ty Gibbs incident not happened, Denny Hamlin would have been in a different position on the final restart. It wouldn’t have been the same restart he got with just those 14 laps to go. Hamlin gets his 60th win and advances to the Championship 4.
