Tyler Guyton injury update: Brian Schottenheimer gives latest on Dallas Cowboys left tacke

Injuries have piled up throughout training camp for the Dallas Cowboys. Arguably no more devastating than left tackle Tyler Guyton, someone who was looking to take a big step ahead of the 2025 season. While he is expected to return for the majority of the year, exactly when is still unclear.

On Tuesday, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer gave an update on where Guyton currently sits. The former first-round pick is getting reps during mock practices at the moment. Schottenheimer was highly complimentary of the way Guyton is working.

“The slow speed stuff, because he needs that mentally to kinda stay prepared,’ Schottenheimer said via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “He’s doing well. Not putting a timeline on it, but I’ve been very pleased with what I’ve seen from him. The intensity that he’s attacking the rehab and the way he’s working is not normal for a second-year player. I’m very proud of him for that.”

At first, reports indicated Guyton tore his ACL and would miss the entire season. Thankfully, the MRI handed out different information as he actually suffered a bone fracture. No surgery was required, just some time away from the field.

“It was a huge, huge plus,” Jones said via 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “Not only for us but the organization. The coaching staff is smiling ear to ear today. It’s just because he was making really great progress out there and I think he’ll continue to do that. He’s certainly learned a lot, matured a lot. I think this new coaching staff has helped him.”

Four to six weeks was the timeline given, lining up to be just after the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles — on the shorter end. Of course, missing multiple games is still a possibility if Guyton needs some more time to recover.

However, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones did provide some optimism for Guyton being ready for the Eagles game. “I don’t know (whether Guyton will play the opener),” Jones said on Aug. 5. “But it looks good.”

In the meantime, Nate Thomas has been getting a look at left tackle. Thomas is a former seventh-round pick out of Louisiana but has done enough throughout training camp to get first-team looks with Guyton injured. A good amount of playing time came in Dallas’ first preseason game of the year against the Los Angeles Rams, protecting potential backup quarterback Joe Milton.
