Tyler Guyton injury update: Brian Schottenheimer reveals Cowboys OL's status for Thanksgiving vs. Chiefs
Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday that left tackle Tyler Guyton is unlikely to play in the Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. Schottenheimer did not definitively rule him out.
Guyton sustained an ankle injury in the second half of Sunday’s 24-21 Week 12 home victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The injury is considered to be on the “milder” side of a typical high ankle sprain, according to Todd Archer of ESPN. The quick turnaround makes things difficult for Guyton, who has started 10-of-11 games for the Cowboys this season.
Assuming Guyton doesn’t play, Nate Thomas would get the start at left tackle on Thursday. Thomas started the Week 5 game against the New York Jets and played the final 31 snaps of the Philadelphia game. Hakeem Adeniji would serve as backup to Thomas.
Cowboys set to be without Tyler Guyton on Thanksgiving Day
Guyton was the Cowboys’ 2024 first-round selection out of Oklahoma. The 24-year-old has graded out 57th out of 78 offensive tackles, per Pro Football Focus. Guyton, however, has dropped his pressure rate from 9.4% in year one to 7.2% in year two. Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones recently expressed optimism about Guyton moving forward.

“I am confident he has the skills and the length to overcome, what, to overcome the pre-snap penalties,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “I have seen that done. I have seen that his first [two] years, including this year, he is out there in a pretty open space, to look at how he’s playing. He can get better. Players do get better with pre-snap, concentration, focus. They can. It usually comes at the worst times, and when it does, it can mess up a big play.
“He is unique in his talent, unique in his feet, to have the length that he’s got. I think he is gonna be a top player for us.”
Kansas City will also be shorthanded up front on Thanksgiving. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Monday that Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith is dealing with both high and low ankle sprains and is expected to miss time.
