Urban Meyer talks Trevor Lawrence, critical of Jaguars offense

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer has incredibly high standards for his football teams. He didn’t win three national championships at two different schools in college football without expecting the very best out of your players.
After the Jags’ 23-13 loss in the preseason to the Browns, the head coach was not pleased. One of his biggest issues with his offense was the slow tempo and not getting up to the line of scrimmage quick enough.
Urban Meyer on Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars offense
“I don’t want to be one of those slow, wallowing offenses,” Meyer said.
He was very upset with his offense and he made that crystal clear to reporters after the game.
“Just disappointing offensively. I don’t like slow offenses and I told them…I thought that our 3rd quarter was getting better with just tempo. Getting up to the line of scrimmage and snapping the ball.”
Tonight was the first start for rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Meyer gave his thoughts on how the top overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft played. “Trevor, I believe was six-of-nine but we gave up two sacks…I’ll have more for ya, if he’s holding onto the ball a little bit long. I kind of felt he did on one of them.”
Meyer did praise Lawrence for a downfield throw to receiver Marvin Jones. “The ball to his left, I think it was on third down. He really anticipated a nice out cut, scrambled, and delivered a nice one down to Marvin Jones.”

Even after he praised his quarterback, Meyer was quick to remind everyone that Lawrence “he held the ball a little bit.”
Clearly, tempo and getting rid of the football quickly are going to be two major points of emphasis for Urban Meyer and this offense. He mentioned it several times.
The Trevor Lawrence era begins in Jacksonville
Lawrence led Clemson to a national title as a freshman. And now the Jaguars are expecting Lawrence to develop into their franchise quarterback. Meyer was brought in this offseason from the college game and decided to piece the new era in Jacksonville around Lawrence. The duo is expected to play a large part in the franchise’s turnaround on the field.
A Heisman runner-up in his final season in Clemson, Trevor Lawrence has now entered a Jacksonville quarterback room that includes Gardner Minshew and C.J. Beathard. The Jaguars have been searching for a reliable quarterback for years. Since 2010, Blake Bortles is the only quarterback to start all 16 games in a season.
