These two former SEC East foes have played 34 times in the past, including annually since 1992. South Carolina leads the all-time series 30-4 overall, including 16 consecutive victories over the Commodores.
Vanderbilt won in 1998 and 1999, as well as in 2007 and 2008. Otherwise, South Carolina has won every other matchup. Vanderbilt came close in 2021, but ultimately lost 21-20.
Last season, South Carolina took the victory handily last November. Beating Vanderbilt 28-7, the Gamecocks defense held QB Diego Pavia scoreless during the first half before the Commodores scored midway through the third quarter. It was their only score of the game.
Meanwhile, South Carolina took a 14-0 lead into halftime and despite Vanderbilt cutting their lead in half during the third quarter. The Gamecocks answered with a pair of Rocket Sanders touchdowns to round out their scoring efforts. Now in the NFL, Sanders totaled three touchdowns during the matchup and rushed for 126 yards on 15 carries.

South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers completed 14 of his 20 passing attempts for 238 yards and two touchdowns. He added 38 yards on the ground as well. Pavia pieced together 231 yards of total offense, including 65 yards on the ground and Vanderbilt’s only touchdown on the afternoon.
“That was a three-phase ass-kicking, and credit to them,” Commodores head coach Clark Lea said after the game. “They earned it.”
At the time, South Carolina improved to 6-3 on the season and would go on to finish the year with nine wins. For Vanderbilt, it was the first of three-straight losses for the Commodores after a 5-2 start to the season.
Both teams would love to get off to a fast start in SEC play. While the odds sway one way, it has the makings to be a competitive matchup featuring two of the most exciting quarterbacks in the conference.
Vanderbilt will return to non-conference play for two weeks before taking on Alabama to begin October in a matchup that everyone will be watching based on last year’s result. For the Gamecocks, they’ll be fully immersed in SEC play until the final two weeks of the regular season.
