Rory McIlroy and his Team Europe teammates were heckled throughout much of Saturday’s Day 2 of the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. It started immediately, as fans shouted “F*ck you, Rory” into the microphone ahead of morning foursome play.

Video has since emerged of a separate incident involving McIlroy and his wife, Erica. As McIlroy and his wife walked through a crowd of fans, one person threw a beer at the two of them.

It was one of several incidents Saturday at Bethpage Black, multiple involving McIlroy. At one point during foursome play, McIlroy told the crowd behind him to “shut the f*ck up,” after being yelled at as he lined up his approach shot.

McIlroy was subject to verbal abuse for the entirety of the day. Fans shouted that his Masters win earlier this year was a “fluke,” and some took shots at his personal life and marriage.

“I don’t mind them having a go at us,” McIlroy said. “Like, that’s to be expected. I mean, that’s what an away Ryder Cup is. Whenever they are still doing it while you are over the ball and trying to hit your shot, that’s the tough thing.”

New York State police spokesman Beau Duffy said that two fans were ejected, per ESPN. American comedian and actress Heather McMahan, the master of ceremonies, stepped down from her role. She reportedly joined in on the expletive-laced chants toward McIlroy.

“Heather McMahan has extended an apology to Rory McIlroy and Ryder Cup Europe and has stepped down from hosting the first tee of the Ryder Cup,” the PGA of America said in a statement.

Team Europe, holding a dominant 12-5 lead, needs just two points from singles Sunday to win their second consecutive Ryder Cup. McIlroy is facing off against world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who has struggled to make an impact this Ryder Cup. McIlroy, meanwhile, is 3-0-1.
