Video emerges of Zane Smith apparently trying to wreck Carson Hocevar as retaliation

While there wasn’t much drama for the winner at the Iowa Corn 350 on Sunday, there was plenty to be found elsewhere on the track. Much of it involved Zane Smith and Carson Hocevar.

Things seemed to begin midway through the race, when Hocevar got into Smith and spun him around with 230 laps down. Smith was heated over the incident, yelling at his crew over their on-track instructions.

Then it appeared like Zane Smith attempted to take matters into his own hands a few laps later. With 238 laps down, Smith seemed to swerve at Hocevar’s back bumper, narrowly missing.

The incident started with Hocevar making a pass to the inside of Smith. After he got by, Smith wound up in position off the back left bumper of Hocevar.

Dash cam footage then seemed to show Zane Smith attempting to hook Carson Hocevar as he cut to the right. He missed, leaving Hocevar no worse for the wear. But the incident caught the watchful eye of several journalists. You can view the sequence below.

I’m going to venture to guess that Zane Smith is not pleased with Carson Hocevar after their incident earlier.

While the two had a relatively uneventful rest of the race, the drama would pick up on the track afterwards. Hocevar was in the middle of an interview with a reporter when he was interrupted by Ryan Bergenty, the crew chief for Zane Smith.

Bergenty broke up the interview and had some choice words for Smith. On the video of the interview, Bergenty can be heard initiating the conversation.

“Hey, when are you going to learn to f****** drive, dude?” Bergenty said, per Stephen Stumpf. “I mean you wiped us the f*** out.”

Stumpf, who was conducting the interview with Hocevar, would add more context, as well. He noted that Bergenty questioned Hocevar’s driving ability.

“Our car is fucking wrecked because you drive like a f****** r****d,” Bergenty said, per Stumpf. The incident with Carson Hocevar added to an already tough day for Smith.

Following the wreck, Smith lashed out at his crew for the instructions they’d been giving him. He barked at them over the team radio.

“Gotta quit telling me how to f****** drive these things, dude,” Zane Smith said, per Steven Taranto of CBS Sports. “Every time I poke middle we get f****** wrecked.”

Smith was also upset with his crew for not putting up his sign in the pit box. Overall it was a pretty forgettable day for Smith, one made more frustrating by the interaction with Carson Hocevar.

Smith finished the day in second-to-last place, earning a P36 finish. Hocevar, meanwhile, squeaked out a top-10 finish, ending the day in P8.
