Washington Commanders hire Jesse Madden, grandson of John Madden, as offensive assistant coach

The Washington Commanders announced Tuesday that former Michigan defensive back Jesse Madden is joining the coaching staff as an offensive quality control coach.
Jesse Madden, who recently graduated from Michigan, is the grandson of Pro Football Hall of Fame coach John Madden. A member of the Wolverines National Championship-winning team in 2024, this will be Madden’s first coaching opportunity in the NFL. Washington also named Brian Schneider the team’s new assistant special teams coordinator.

Madden will work with one of the league’s best offenses in Washington, coming off a season in which it averaged 28.5 points per game. Much of that had to do with the emergence of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Daniels wowed throughout the season, responsible for 31 touchdowns. He was named AP Offensive Rookie of the Year after leading the Commanders to their first NFC Championship Game since 1991. Daniels finished seventh in MVP voting.

Madden will work under head coach Dan Quinn and offensive Kliff Kingsbury; the latter turned down head coaching opportunities to return to Washington in 2025.
“I didn’t get into this to be a head coach again,” Kingsbury told ESPN last month. “It’s not about money. It never has been about money. So, that won’t move me at all. It’s just I want to do the best job we can here for those guys and then kind of go from there.”
