As the Washington Football Team is expected to reveal their choice, the staff at their team store was seen stocking merchandise with the new team name. Fans have begun to share photos of merchandise with the name “Washington Commanders” being unboxed at FedEx Field.

Washington has new team name

“Staff at the team store at FedEx Field are currently unloading boxes and stocking shelves with Washington Commanders merchandise,” stated Washington Football Team insider Chad Ryan.

Washington has been involved in a lengthy renaming process after changing their name from the Redskins in 2020. After spending two seasons as the Washington Football Team, it appears they are drawing very near the big reveal. Multiple names have been floated as potential replacements by fans and the team itself, but “Commanders” seems to be the final choice.

Previously, the name seemed to be confirmed after the Commanders.com website domain transferred ownership to MarkMonitor. The company is used by the NFL for all of their team website domains, apparently confirming the name’s finalization.

Washington looking to rebuild

The final four seasons while known as the Washington Redskins were rather forgettable. The end to former head coach Jay Gruden’s tenure was frustrating for many fans. After winning the NFC East with a 9-7 record in 2015, Washington has failed to win more than eight games in a season. After starting 0-5 in 2019, Washington fired Gruden and finished the season 3-13.

In 2020, Washington re-branded to the Washington Football Team and completely started over on the field. The team brought in Ron Rivera to lead the team, and also revamped the front office. Washington made the playoffs after winning the NFC East with a 7-9 record in Rivera’s first season, but 2021 was different.

Including the postseason, the Washington NFL franchise has an overall record of 640-642-28. The majority of that history is from the Redskins era, but now, a new era is set to begin, likely as the Washington Commanders. Washington will officially reveal their new name and branding on February 2, but all signs point to the Commanders becoming official on that day.
