In Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers tipped his cap to Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. Football is just as much a mental game as it is physical and whenever Rodgers can catch an opposing defense napping he takes advantage. So when Tomlin noticed his defense was out of alignment on a Packers drive in the first half, he quickly called a timeout. That resulted in this exchange between the two.

Although Tomlin possibly prevented a big play there, he could not stop Rodgers from leading the Packers to the win. Green Bay beat Pittsburgh at home 27-17 thanks in part to winning the second quarter 17-3. The Packers controlled the game from that point on. They finished the game with 367 yards of total offense. Rodgers had a quiet game by his standards. He was 20 of 36 passing for 248 yards and two passing touchdowns. He also had the team’s only rushing touchdown making him responsible for all three of the Packer’s scores for six.

Meanwhile, for the Steelers, it was another week of offensive struggles. Ben Roethlisberger was 26 of 40 for 232 yards and one touchdown. But the Steelers quarterback was responsible for both Pittsburgh turnovers. He fumbled in the second quarter which resulted in a touchdown for the Packers, giving them the lead. And his interception was on the Steelers’ final possession and subsequentially ended the game.

Steelers singing the same old tune

Pittsburgh has now fallen to 1-3, losing three straight games after opening the season with a win against the Buffalo Bills. After Sunday’s loss to the Packers, the Steelers were repeating an all too familiar routine with Roethlisberger taking the blame for the loss.

“What a challenge for us,” Roethlisberger said. “I think this is going to test us all. We need to look in the mirror and figure out what path we want to take.”

And the week before following a loss to the Bengals he said this.

“I know the coaches are doing a great job of scripting things, whether it’s screens or getting the ball out,” Roethlisberger said. “Plays you really like. As an offense, we need to start faster, but it starts with me. I need to get better with that because that’s kind of the key to a successful day, starting fast.”

What is happening to the Steelers as a whole is nothing to chuckle about. But if Tomlin and the Steelers can turn their season around maybe there will be more to be happy out besides thwarting an Aaron Rodgers scheme on one play.
