Seattle Seahawks punter Michael Dickson pulled off the rare double punt on Thursday night, and it worked out pretty well for the Seahawks. As Dickson looked to punt on fourth-and-14 late in the third quarter, the punt was blocked by a Los Angeles Rams defender. Dickson then recovered the blocked punt, picked it up, and booted it away yet again. The ball was downed at the Rams’ 11-yard line after an impressive roll on the punt.

As long as the initial punt does not cross the line of scrimmage, a second punt is permissible according to the NFL rule book. Dickson’s double punt ended up netting 62 yards for the Seahawks. The Rams ultimately came away with the 26-17 victory, but Dickson definitely came away with a lot of headlines for the Seahawks.

Dickson is in his fourth season with the Seahawks

Dickson came into the league in 2018 with the Seahawks after a three year career with the Texas Longhorns. At Texas, Dickson punted 226 times in three seasons for 10,242 yards, averaging 45.3 yards per punt. Seattle selected Dickson with the 149th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

As a junior in 2017, Dickson punted well enough to earn national honors at Texas. That year, he won the Ray Guy Award as the most outstanding punter in all of college football. Dickson was also a consensus All-American in 2017. The strong play from Dickson led to him being a rare punter that is selected in the NFL Draft.

In his four years with the Seahawks, Dickson has played in 53 games, punting 238 times. He has punted for 11,318 yards, averaging 47.6 yards per punt.

After Thursday night’s loss to the Rams, the Seahawks are 2-3 on the season and sit at the bottom of the loaded NFC West. The Seahawks travel to Pittsburgh next week before hosting the Saints and Jaguars in the two weeks prior to their bye week.
