Key Takeaways
- Diving into the numbers, the first thing that stands out is that Wake Forest doesn’t score a ton of points at just 27 per game, but doesn’t allow many either at just 21.2 per game. The Beavers, meanwhile, have improved their numbers slightly, scoring over 18 points per game, but are still allowing a whopping 35 points per contest.
- Wake Forest and Jake Dickert will look to run the ball with conviction with RB Demond Claiborne and QB Robby Ashford, and tally just over 150 rush yards per game. Oregon State, meanwhile, has improved its rushing marks from the low 70s per game it was a few weeks ago to 94.5 now, but that’s still a steep decline from what we’ve seen in the past.
- In terms of rushing yards allowed per game, the two teams are very close at Wake’s 142 and Oregon State’s 156. The Beavers’ run defense has also slightly ticked up over the past couple of weeks, perhaps indicating the defense could be coming along.
- The two squads are also neck-and-neck in terms of passing yards, with the Demon Deacons averaging 245.6 to Oregon State’s 259.3. The Beavers have had to pass more often than Wake this season, to be sure, but as a pure passer, I think the Beavers have the advantage with Maalik Murphy.
- Passing yards allowed is where these two teams go in opposite directions. Oregon State’s pass defense has really struggled defending against the deep, shot play this season, as we’ve seen opponents target the one-on-one matchups on the outside. The Beavers are 115th in the country in pass yards allowed per game at 271 per this season, something they’ll have to tighten up to be less of a defensive liability.
- Wake, meanwhile, allows 182.6 passing yards per game, well below what the Beavers average, so I think, in addition to establishing the run game, this will have to be a game where the receivers get open and Murphy can find them if the Beavers want to pull off the upset.
- Looking at conversion rates, the Beavers have been better on third downs (42% vs 36%) offensively and defensively (39% vs 35%), so that’s an advantage for Oregon State.
- Neither team has been overly aggressive on fourth downs this season, but Wake has converted 60% of the time to Oregon State’s 50%.
- The Beavers do hold the ball for nearly three minutes more on average than the Demon Deacons, so time of possession could be a key battle in a game that could have rain and be kept largely on the ground.
