Oregon State Interim HC Robb Akey Announces Staff Changes

With Akey taking over as interim HC, one of the first things he was going to have to do was name an interim defensive coordinator and a linebackers coach, as previous head coach Trent Bray also held both of those positions.
Akey elected to go with co-defensive coordinators as secondary coach Rod Chance and defensive line coach Ilaisa Tuiaki will handle the defense. Tuiaki was most recently BYU’s defensive coordinator from 2016-22 under Kalani Sitake. Chance, meanwhile, had co-defensive coordinator title added to his title earlier this season, which he retains, and now has a larger role on defense. He was previously Southern Utah’s DC back in 2016-17.
As far as coaching the linebackers, Akey named defensive assistant Mark Criner as LBs. Criner is a veteran defensive coach, having begun his career back in 1991, and has had stops all across college and the professional ranks.
Akey didn’t have to make changes offensively, but chose to do so anyway. Former Beavers’ OC and previous offensive quality control coach Danny Langsdorf will call plays for Lafayette, while Ryan Gunderson will coach QBs. Akey didn’t comment further on whether this change was just for this weekend or something more permanent.
Special teams will be a collaborative effort involving the entire staff, per Akey, but he’ll still be overseeing that side of the ball as well.
