Oregon State targeting Alabama WR coach JaMarcus Shephard to be next head coach
The Oregon State coaching search appears to be in its final moments and days.
On Thursday evening, BeaversEdge’s Ryan Harlan confirmed with sources that Oregon State is targeting Alabama’s wide receivers coach Jamarcus Shephard as the program’s next head coach.
The Beavers’ coaching search is now 46 days in after Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes relieved head coach Trent Bray of his duties following a 39-14 loss to Wake Forest on October 11.
Shephard’s Background
Shephard will come to Corvallis, assuming a deal gets completed after spending the past four seasons with Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer both with the Crimson Tide as well as with the Washington Huskies.
Before joining Kalen DeBoer’s Washington staff in 2022 as associate head coach, pass game coordinator, and WR coach, Shephard coached with Jeff Brohm at Purdue. He was first the PGC and WR coach in 2017, before being promoted to Co-OC/WR coach.
Before Purdue, Shephard spent one season (2016) on Mike Leach’s staff at Washington State, and before that, he got his collegiate coaching start with Willie Taggart at Western Kentucky. He served first as a volunteer in 2011/12, and he was named a quality control coach in 2013. After Taggart left for South Florida following 2012, Shephard stayed on staff with Bobby Petrino in ’13, and Brohm in 2014 and 2015 (special teams and WRs) before moving on to WSU.
When DeBoer departed Washington for Alabama, he brought Shephard with him, where he’s served as AHC/Co-OC/WR coach since the start of the 2024 season. During his time with Alabama, he’s overseen the growth of Ryan Williams and numerous others.
As a player, Shephard starred at receiver for DePauw University from 2001-04, finishing third all-time in school history for career all-purpose yards and first in career kickoff yardage.
