Trent Bray fired as Oregon State head football coach

The Trent Bray era of Oregon State football has officially ended.
On Sunday morning, following Oregon State’s seventh straight loss to begin the 2025 season, a 39-14 loss to Wake Forest, the Oregon State administration terminated the contract of head football coach Trent Bray.
After going 5-7 in Bray’s first season as head coach of the Beavers, Oregon State began the 2025 season with seven consecutive losses, including Saturday’s loss to Wake Forest.
Dating back to the 2024 season, the Beavers had lost 13 of 14 games, with a 41-38 win over Washington State being the only win over that time span. Bray finishes his tenure as Oregon State’s head football coach with a 5-14 record in 19 games.
In hopes of turning the program around from last year’s dismal finish, which featured six losses in their last seven games following a 4-1 start, Bray and the Beavers added 14 players from the transfer portal, including one of the nation’s top quarterback transfers in Duke’s Maalik Murphy.
Despite the influx of talent, the Beavers’ offense and defense have both struggled mightily this fall. The offense, averaging just 17.7 points per game, currently ranks 123rd nationally out of 136 programs at the FBS level. The defense, behind Bray’s play calling, ranked even worse at 128th nationally, allowing 35.6 points per game.
Oregon State was Trent Bray’s first head coaching job after serving on the Beavers’ coaching staff from 2018 through 2023 under then-head coach Jonathan Smith. He also served as an assistant at Arizona State, California Redwoods, and Nebraska during his coaching career.
Following Jonathan Smith’s departure to Michigan State after the 2023 season, Bray was promoted to head coach in hopes of sustaining the success and culture established during Smith’s tenure.
Bray, this season, was being paid $2,000,008 by Oregon State to serve as the program’s head coach with a buyout of $3,900,013. He was the 70th highest-paid head coach in the country according to USA Today’s coaching salaries database.
