Meaningful games in November are back on tap for Southern Miss

It has been a few years since the Golden Eagles have played truly meaningful games in November. Sure, there was the 2022 season when Southern Miss had to win on the road at UL Monroe to become bowl eligible to then win the Lending Tree Bowl in Mobile over a 5-7 Rice 38-24. A game in which Frank Gore Jr. ran for an NCAA bowl game record 329 yards. Southern Miss finished the season 7-6.
This year is different. The Golden Eagles are already bowl eligible at 6-2 (4-0) but there is much more to play for than just a bowl. A win over Arkansas State will put Southern Miss in a really strong position to win the SBC West and play for a Sun Belt Championship. To get there, there are still four games left to be played. The Golden Eagles are a team led by a head coach who knows what it takes to win a championship, a quarterback who does as well, and defense who thrives off turnovers and momentum. The pieces are there to make something special happen.
No matter what happens this weekend, it has been a fun season. Even if the Golden Eagles fall at Arkansas State, they will still be in a good position to win the SBC West. We have heard for years that if the Golden Eagles win the fans will return. The football team is doing their part. It is now time for fans of the black and gold to do theirs. Seasons like this have been hard to come by as of late in Hattiesburg. Showing up to The Rock next weekend, no matter the outcome Saturday, and watching this squad play two more games at home is a great way to show these Golden Eagles just how much the fans appreciate what they are doing. Who knows? There might be third game at The Rock this season if things play out in the Golden Eagle’s favor.
