With the 2025-26 season on the horizon, we will be starting a series detailing each individual scholarship player on the roster.

The first player in this installment will be Sananda Fru.

Sanandu Fru, a 6-foot-11, 245-pound center, will be one of the most important pieces to the Louisville basketball roster this upcoming season. With the departure of James Scott, who averaged 23.6 MPG last season according to Basketball Reference, there is a void at the center position. Frank Anselem-Ibe, another center on the 2024-25 Louisville roster, graduated as well. Aly Khalifa will also serve minutes at the 5 spot for the upcoming 2025-26 season.

During the 2024-25 regular season with Basketball Lowen Braunschweig (Basketball Bundesliga – Division 1 in Germany), Fru averaged 12.3 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 0.8 APG, 0.9 SPG, and 1.6 BPG, according to Pro Ballers. Unfortunately, his team was eliminated in the playoffs by Würzburg Baskets. From an individual production standpoint, Fru finished on a high note.

During the 2024-25 playoffs, he averaged 12.4 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 0.6 APG, 0.4 SPG, and 2.0 BPG. He notched 2 double-doubles in the process, as well. In his last game of the playoffs, he totaled 21 points, 15 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 4 blocks.

Pat Kelsey’s thoughts on the Sananda Fru Signing

While discussing the incoming class of signings, Pat Kelsey gave his thoughts on Sananda Fru and stated the following, according to GoCards.com.

“Sananda is an impact player for our program from Day 1. At 6-11, 255 with 7-4 wingspan he is an imposing physical presence with athleticism, skill and basketball IQ. He impacts winning on both ends of the floor. He is very good in the pick and roll as a lob threat and finisher, but I believe his game is evolving before our eyes as a viable three-point threat as well. He has very good shooting mechanics and in our system his confidence in that area will skyrocket. He attacks closeouts and is a productive player getting downhill at the rim on drives. Defensively, he blocks shots and his ability to move his feet makes him a very good ‘switch big,’ which is extremely valuable in modern basketball. He has competed against grown men in one of the best professional leagues in Europe over the last three years. Sananda is a terrific person. I am so excited to have him as a part of Louisville Basketball.”

Sananda Fru Offensive Scouting Report

Where Fru has a major impact offensively is through his rim-finishing. During the 2024-25 season, he converted 74.6 percent of his shots around the rim, according to Synergy Sports. He’s a willing screener and rolls to the rim hard, where he can catch-and-finish in the paint. He also can finish plays as a rim-runner in transition or out of the dunker spot in the half-court.

What really stood out on film as well was how much he contributes on the offensive glass. He continuously makes an effort in this capacity, fighting for tip-outs and put-backs. He also has shown poise after coming down with rebounds, not forcing the issue and kicking out to open shoots on the perimeter. This scenario is an ideal time to find open shooters on the perimeter for catch-and-shoot opportunites from three.

Additionally, Fru has shown some upside as a post-scorer and faceup driver. He knows how to take advantage of guard switches, using drop-steps around the rim for higher percentage finishes at the basket. While facing up, Fru can take slower bigs off the bounce by using his straight-line speed. As he becomes more comfortable attacking with the ball in his hands, this part of his game will become more fluid. For now, he is best suited as a play-finisher off teammate creation.

Another element of his game that has intriguing upside is his flashes of floor-spacing/encouraging shot mechanics.

From a mechanical standpoint, he has a high-release point and compact release. However, he does have a ball-dip, which slows down his release speed. When misses start happening is when he pulls the string on his release or has different landings. If he can make strides in these two aspects of his release, expect the volume + efficiency to increase. Expect this part of his game to be a focusing point during individual instruction/summer work with the coaching staff.

To give some insight into his shooting production last season, here are some statistics. On catch-and-shoot threes during the 2024-25 season, Fru converted 9/27 of his attempts, according to Synergy Sports. Also, he shot 76.8 percent from the free-throw line, which is a positive indicator of touch.

Lastly, Fru has shown flashes of high-post playmaking, where he can operate as a hub and find cutters from that area of the floor. He’s also a heady passer off offensive rebounds and has shown spurts of connective playmaking when diving to the rim as a roller.

Sananda Fru Defensive Scouting Report

Defensively, Fru’s mobility really shines on this end of the floor. He can play in multiple different screen coverages because of how well he moves feet and protects the rim. His ground coverage allows him to get out and hedge ball screens, as he can stunt ball-handlers, then quickly recover to the rolling big. He also can compile chase down blocks when he trails the roller from behind.

He’s also comfortable playing in drop coverage due to his ability to close out to PU shooters in the mid-range with his length + ground coverage, or take on downhill slashers at the rim. This is where his understanding of verticality comes into play, where he alters and blocks shots at the rim.

He defends decently in space, as well, having the foot speed to stay in front of guards when switched onto them. One area he can improve upon is staying grounded, as sometimes he can jump on head-fakes.

How does he fit in Louisville’s System?

Fru is an ideal match in Kelsey’s system due to his up-tempo style of play and what he has prioritized recently at the center position. The main focuses at the center position have been athleticism, rim-running, and versatility on defense. With all of the perimeter firepower surrounding Fru, expect him to have a simplified role on offense. His production will come from setting screens, diving to the rim, running the floor in transition, catching lobs, and adding value on the offensive glass.

He’s also a great ball-screen partner next to Mikel Brown, Jr., who will serve him up plenty of lobs when rolling to the rim. Additionally, he will have plenty of chances to finish out of the dunker spot off teammate creation.

Defensively, his versatility defending ball-screens and serving as a rim-protector will be welcomed in Kelsey’s system. Expect his defensive role to mirror how James Scott defended last season.

Bottom line:

Fru is a versatile front-court piece who will bring value on both ends of the floor. With already playing multiple years of professional basketball in Europe, he is used to high-level competition. Expect him to make an impact right away for the Cardinals and be a major contributor.
