Usually when a player hits the transfer portal he’s looking for more playing time or a bigger stage. But that doesn’t mean a transfer will actually result in more playing time, even if he achieves the bigger stage.

Kentucky brought in a record-number of transfers from the portal this offseason. Many are already penciled in as starters while others were recruited for backup roles with maybe a longer-term payoff.

In the case of six Kentucky portal additions from this offseason, the path to playing time is less clear than it might have been if they had stuck around at their old college homes. That doesn’t mean any decision to transfer was a bad one, but it does prompt questions about what the future might hold.

Wallace Unamba left the program after he didn’t win a starting job, but six other portal additions in his situation are still around.
