Deion Sanders cited money as the biggest factor for players leaving programs in the transfer portal. The Colorado head coach has seen players come in and out of Boulder, but also around the country.
When it comes down to why these players are more apt to leave, it’s a payday, according to Sanders. He was upfront about the reality of college football free agency.
“The thing about these guys, man, you got to understand, when a guy leaves a program that selected him, picked him, or got him at the portal, he leaves for a multitude of reasons,” Sanders said. “The number one reason people leave his money, it’s not a disdain for staff, a disdain for players, it’s money. Let’s just be honest, man, let’s stop sugarcoating this foolishness man. That’s why most people leave. I admire these guys that want to go for another opportunity, a bigger opportunity, and play for the national championship. I applaud that, but that’s not the number one reason people leave programs.”
Whether or not money is the reason for Colorado’s success or failures, it wasn’t the best year for Sanders and company. Colorado went 3-9 in Year 3 under Coach Prime.
For Sanders, losing is just as much a part of the game as winning. Of course, you certainly hope to be on the latter end of the equation more often than not. But he provided Colorado fans with a glimpse of what they can expect going forward. That’s someone who is fully dedicated to turning things around.
“You don’t have to go easy on me, I’m a big boy. I’ve been doing this for a long time,” Deion Sanders said. “And when I win I don’t mind a clap and when I lose I don’t mind a boo. I played this game. I know this game like the back of my hand. And I love this game and I love all the sups and downs, the ins and outs about it. I’m built for every last bit of it.
“But if anybody’s built to reconcile and to get this back on course it’s me. And I will do it if it’s the last thing I do on our Earth. Trust me when I tell you. This was the Last Supper.”
