Everything moved pretty quickly between the Cyclones and Lone Star State lead guard Marcus Zelee with a visit to Ames soon followed by a commitment earlier this month.

But just as quickly as things came together, they’ve come apart, as the Austin (Texas) point guard has opened back up his recruitment. Per a report from On3’s Joe Tipton, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Zelee has de-committed from Iowa State and look elsewhere.

Zelee, who has competed for ASAK Elite on the Adidas 3SSB circuit this summer, averaged 5.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists across five games in the Palmetto Road Championships a week ago. Multiple Iowa State coaches were in attendance for the event.

For the entire spring and summer stretch with his AAU team, he averaged 6.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists. He was a 53.1-percent shooter from the field and connected on 9-of-22 attempts from long range.

With the loss of the Lone Star State point, Iowa State‘s 2026 class now consists of shooting guards Yusef Gray and Christian Wiggins.

Although the Cyclones will be losing veteran four-year starting point guard Tamin Lipsey ahead of the 2026-27 season, they will still return a solid group of backcourt players who can handle the ball.

Included in that list is a pair of freshmen, Killyan Toure and Jamarion Batemon. Eastern Washington transfer Mason Williams will also be coming off a medical redshirt with two seasons of eligibility remaining. The experience returning to the mix next summer could have made it difficult for Zelee to carve out much of a role as a true freshman.

Iowa State is still likely to target another point guard for its 2026 class to complement the group of returning players.
